The Department of Correctional Services invites suitably qualified and disciplined individuals to apply for Security Officer positions within the Free State and Northern Cape Region, based at Mangaung Maximum Correctional Centre. A total of 381 posts are available across different post levels, offering an opportunity to build a long-term career in the public service.

Overview of the Security Officer Role
Security Officers play a critical role in the correctional system. They are responsible for maintaining order, enforcing security standards, controlling inmate movement, and ensuring the safety of officials, offenders, visitors, and the public.
This role requires discipline, integrity, physical and mental readiness, and a strong understanding of correctional legislation and security procedures.
Available Posts and Salary Structure
A total of 381 Security Officer posts are available at the following levels:
CB1-1

Salary: R212 358 per annum

Experience: No previous experience required
CB1-2
-
Salary: R257 895 per annum
-
Experience: 10 years’ relevant experience at CB1-1 level
CB1-3
-
Salary: R313 521 per annum
-
Experience: 10 years’ relevant experience at CB1-2 level
Salaries are structured according to public service regulations and may include additional benefits in line with government employment policies.
Centre and Location

Region: Free State and Northern Cape

Centre: Mangaung Maximum Correctional Centre
Successful candidates will be appointed within this region and may be required to work shifts, including weekends and public holidays, depending on operational requirements.
Minimum Requirements
To be considered for appointment, applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:

Matric / Grade 12 Certificate
-
Successful completion of one of the following:
-
Correctional Science Learnership
-
Basic Training
-
Induction Training Course (ITC)
-
These qualifications ensure that candidates are adequately prepared for the demands of correctional security work.
Experience Requirements by Level
-
CB1-1:
No previous experience required. This level is suitable for entry-level candidates who meet the training requirements. -
CB1-2:
Minimum of 10 years’ relevant experience at CB1-1 level. -
CB1-3:
Minimum of 10 years’ relevant experience at CB1-2 level.
Experience must be verifiable and relevant to correctional security operations.

Key Duties and Responsibilities
Successful candidates will be responsible for the following duties:
Access Control

Performing access control at correctional centres
-
Monitoring and regulating entry and exit points
-
Controlling access between internal sections of the correctional centre
Inmate Movement Control
-
Controlling the movement of inmates within the facility
-
Escorting inmates to and from designated areas
-
Guarding inmates during external movements and public institution visits
Security and Guarding Duties
-
Guarding inmates within correctional centres
-
Providing security during external operations
-
Preventing escapes, disturbances, and security breaches
Physical Security Inspections
-
Conducting regular physical security inspections
-
Identifying and reporting security risks
-
Ensuring compliance with minimum security standards
Control of Stores and Equipment
-
Managing security equipment and stores
-
Ensuring firearms and equipment are properly controlled and accounted for
Security Control Room Management
-
Operating and monitoring security control room systems
-
Responding to alarms and incidents
-
Maintaining accurate security records
Rehabilitation and Human Development Support
-
Ensuring that offenders are managed in a secure, safe, and humane environment
-
Supporting rehabilitation through disciplined correction and human development practices
Conditions of Appointment

Appointment will be made in terms of the Correctional Service Act
