SASSA distributes the R350 Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant to millions of South Africans every month. However, some beneficiaries have not received all their payments for the months that they were approved, here’s what happens to those R350 payments. The R350 Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant is provided by the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) to beneficiaries who are unemployed and in need of financial assistance from the South African government.

Millions of South Africans have been benefitting from the R350 SRD grant, however many have raised concerns about not being paid for all the months that they were approved for the grant.

SASSA assured beneficiaries that they would be paid for all the months that they were approved but that these payments may not necessarily be made as a double payment or in the form of a lump sum or on even the same day. In a social media post, This means that all the payments due to a beneficiary can be split over days or weeks.

“SASSA will do these multiple payments in a month until the backlog is finalized, where after monthly payments will resume.”.

SASSA announced that everyone who was receiving R350 grant payments would have to reapply for the grant as the qualifying criteria changed due to the change in regulatory framework.

The following criteria must be met in order to qualify for the R350 SRD grant:

A person must be

  1. South African citizen, permanent resident, refugee, a holder of a special permit under the Special Angolan Dispensation, the Lesotho Exemption Permit Dispensation; Zimbabwe Exemption Permit Dispensation; or an Asylum seeker with a valid section 22 permit or visa;
  2. Between the ages of 18 and 60
  3. Residing in the borders of South Africa
  4. Registered on the Home Affairs database or on SASSA’s social grant database for individuals without ID documents.
  5. Not living in a government Institution or subsidised institution
  6. Not have an income more than R350
  7. Not receiving covid-19 social Relief of Distress
  8. Not receiving Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) Benefits or National Student Financial Aid Scheme (Nsfas) support or any other social grants distributed by SASSA

Beneficiaries who applied for the SRD grant from April 2022 and were approved can expect to start receiving their payments for the new cycle of the R350 SRD grant from mid-June 2022.

Covid-19 R350 SRD grant was first introduced in April 2020 as a government intervention to combat the loss of household income that occurred as a result of unemployment caused by the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the country’s economy.
